Nikki looked down, pondering what Jack was saying. He was right. This wasn’t going to stop if she just stood on the sidelines and waited idly for everything to happen for her. But she was still afraid. When Jack offered to join her, she looked at him incredulously. “Really?” Her first response was to decline, she didn’t want Jack to see her at her weakest. What if he began to believe what those bullies said? Jack’s offer to freeze the kids made Nikki chuckle. “You are incredible,” she mused as she nuzzled into Jack’s shoulder. “Thank you. What would I do without you?”

“I am incredible, I know,” Jack said with a smirk. He felt himself slowly turn into a light shade of red when Nikki leaned on his shoulder–he’d never been this close to a girl, or to anyone for that matter. But he didn’t mind at all; in fact he liked it. He liked the warmth it brought him. The more he thought about it, the redder he became, and hoped that Nikki wouldn’t look up to see. To break the awkward mood he was giving off, he continued. “Seriously though, I’ll be right here, okay? Think of me as your…” He scrunched up his nose in thought, searching for the term. “Personal bodyguard.”

Nikki’s eyes widened. “I retract my previous statement.” She shook her head, looking at Jack as though he had grown an extra head. “Jack, I can’t do that, you haven’t got the slightest idea what they’re capable of.” She leaned against the wall and allowed herself to slide down, into a sitting position, extending her hurt leg out. “You don’t have to deal with them. You don’t have to see what they put all those poor kids through. Believe me, if I could, I would’ve already.” Nikki looked down at her hands, clenching then unclenching them. “Jack, I’m- I’m just not… strong enough,” she admitted defeatedly.

“Now that’s not fair,” Jack said, arms still crossed. “Nope. I won’t allow that.” He tried to listen to her explain, and sat beside her, his back on the wall. When she finished, he tried to give her a decent pep talk. “That’s only because you keep putting yourself down. I know it’s easy, but you can’t just let them do all those stuff to you.” He let out a deep sigh, when an idea popped into his head. “How ‘bout we go face them? Together,” he suggested, looking at Nikki. “And when something bad happens, I could just freeze them and then we can run away laughing.”

Nikki nodded understandingly. It was probably better that Jack had waited to tell her, God knows how she would’ve acted. She laughed at Jack’s demand. “Anything my master requests, I shall provide,” she joked, complete with a snooty, stereotypical butler accent. Going for the full effect, Nikki bowed as much as she could without threatening to tip over. She straightened before shaking her head. “But in all seriousness, I’ll do anything to make up for being such a bitch to you earlier. You didn’t deserve that. Just say the words and consider it done.”

Jack chuckled seeing her little impersonation–little might be an understatement however, considering the bow and everything. “Gimme a moment to think,” he said and paused in thought. Initially, he thought of taking an opportunity like this for something of his own benefit. But soon after idea popped into his head, he decided against it. He wasn’t like that, no, not really. “Alright,” he said, crossing his arms, his staff nudged in between them. “I want you to promise me one thing.” He cleared his throat a while, as if what he was going to say was really important. “That you’ll stand up to those kids in your school. To your step-sister.”

Jack tried to brush off her previous attitude but Nikki pulled back, keeping her arms around Jack’s neck. “Even so, all that I said and did was not appropriate. Especially now that I know who you are.” She suddenly realized how close they were and she blushed. But it felt so nice to be held by Jack. He was cool compared to her warmer body temperature. Slightly embarrassed, Nikki bent down to pick up her fallen crutch. “So why didn’t you tell me earlier? Didn’t you trust me?” she asked, partially hurt but more curious than anything.

The moment they pulled apart from each other, he found himself missing the warmth Nikki brought, but he remained still and quiet. His eyebrows furrowed of the small accusation. “What? I do trust you,” he said, shaking his head a bit. “But you were hurt, and you weren’t in the best mood, so it wasn’t really a good time for a confession.” He shrugged, wondering what could’ve happened if he had told her who he was at the very beginning. “You, however, still need to make it up to me for being mean.”

Nikki blinked a few times before whispering “What?” She pushed back her hair with a single hand, unsure of what to do. Someone entering the hospital eyed Nikki up and down, confused as to what this new girl was doing. “C'mere,” she tugged Jack’s arm and lead them down an alley. She didn’t need ‘mentally unstable’ tagged with her 'new girl’ status. Nikki leaned against one of the brick walls. “Wait so you’re- you are- I can see…” No proper sentence could be formulated. “You’re Jack Frost?” she confirmed. A smile slowly broke out on her face. She almost tackled Jack as she engulfed him in a big hug. “Oh my god I can’t believe I can actually see you I almost stopped believing in you and yet you’re here right now and I’m hugging you and you helped me when I was hurt.” Nikki leaned back and covered her mouth. “I’m so sorry that I was so mean to you. I just can’t believe you’re here!” Once again, she wrapped her arms around Jack’s neck.

“I–” Jack was momentarily disrupted when Nikki pulled him along an empty alley. Reaching the area, he was confused as to whether she was glad, angry, or as confused as he was. So he just nodded when she asked about him being Jack Frost. But when she hugged him, his worry about her being angry went away. He didn’t think she’d react like that, considering how harsh she was with him before he brought her to the hospital. He closed his eyes and hugged her back, liking the warm feeling it brought in contrast to his low temperature. Though she’d already hugged him before, to him it still felt new. But good. And when she hugged him a second time, he didn’t really know what to say anymore. All he knew that he was glad about this turn of events. “No, don’t be,” he whispered when she apologized. “Must’ve been weird having a stranger carry you in his arms without permission.”

Nikki tries stalling. “Thanks for all your help. It means a lot.” She hopped forward and hugged Jack tightly and kissed his cheek, two tokens of her thanks. Nikki proceeded to enter the building. A woman at the receptionists desk looked quizzically at Nikki. “Pardon me doll, but what were you doing out there,” the woman inquired, pointing through the glass doors. Nikki blushed. “Oh I was hugging my friend. He helped me over here because-” The woman interjected, “But there’s no one there.” Nikki looked out and sure enough Jack was still there; he was in plain view. Why couldn’t this woman see him? Nikki explained about her injured ankle and a half hour later, her ankle had obtained a metal cast and a single crutch. When Nikki hobbled outside, she turned to Jack, slightly surprised he had kept his word about staying but a tad bit more angry and confused to be grateful. “Ok Jack you have some explaining to do.” If she could cross her arms, she would.

“No problem,” he replied, and is more than surprised with the hug that followed. Even more with the kiss, where he found him cheeks turning a slight red, though he hoped she didn’t see. When she went through the entrance, he waited as patiently as he could outside, walking back and forth, leaning on the walls, and doing random yet entertaining stuff–such as building mini-snowmen–to pass the time. After about thirty minutes, the girl was back and he turned to see her current state, his eyebrows raised upon finally seeing her. “Wow, big improvement–” He paused when he saw the different look on her face–it didn’t look as grateful as it did earlier. Hearing her next words, his eyebrows dropped. His whole expression did. His smile turned into a frown. Sighing, he approached her, his staff, which disappeared and reappeared at his will, preceding his every step. “Nikki, I…” He closed his eyes for a moment, trying to think of what to say, but then the words came out like vomit. “I don’t go to your school, or to any other schools out there because… I’m not human. My name’s Jack Frost, and I’m a winter spirit. Only people who believe in me, can see me.” He looked at her with puppy dog eyes that seemed to shout, please don’t get too mad. Please.

“You know maybe I’ll gain more weight and force you to carry me again. You’ll be missing these lovely memories,” Nikki laughed. The glowing red plus sign shone bright on the top of the hospital building. Nikki bit her bottom lip, fearing what would happen when she went in there. She tried to hide the shaking in her voice as she asked Jack “Will you wait until I come back?”

“Oh, will I, now?” He returned the laugh, liking this new atmosphere that was setting in between them. He stopped when he saw the hospital sign, both relieved and worried. Relieved because Nikki would finally get her ankle treated. Worried because… well, he had this slight fear of hospitals. “Of course I will,” he answered. Looking at Nikki, he let out a nervous chuckle as he led her to the entrance.

sodapopblue95:

“Well, my mother recently got remarried so she and I moved down here. And just like in all those cheesy, pre-teen books, my step-sister is the queen bitch of the school. And her inner satanic conscious went around the whole school, spreading these vicious lies and the students thought it’d be fun to hide me in lockers, throw spitballs in my hair, and graffiti my locker with a few choice words.” Nikki shrugged. “I wish I could go where you go,” she mumbled quietly. Nikki decided a change in subject might be good; she snapped enough at Jack today and he was still being nice to her. “Do you want to take a break, catch a breath? Carrying me around town must not be the easiest thing in the world.”

“Man, that’s gotta suck. I wish I could go where you go. Then we can teach your step-sister and her little minions a lesson or two,” he said with a smile, attempting to comfort her. Not that he’d know anything about it, but bullying was a difficult thing to go through and even though they’d only just met and everything, he hoped he could be there to defend her from these mean people she was talking about. Hearing her suggestion, he came to a subtle halt and gently put her down in a standing position. “Can you stand?” he asked, holding on to her with one arm. They must be getting close, but she was right. “Yup, it’s not easy at all.” He chuckled, stretching his free arm a bit. “You are kind of heavy, you know.”

sodapopblue95:

Nikki pondered the words over in her head. “I guess that’s true.” A thought came to mind. “Wait, if you don’t go to my school, where do you go? I mean, this is the only school until the next three towns over. And believe me, if I could switch over there, I would.”

“Uh, I don’t really go anywhere. Not anymore, at least,” he said, trying to dodge having to tell her he was a spirit. She seemed reluctant in trusting him and he didn’t want to freak her out further. “So what’s the deal with you and your school?” She seemed to have been talking bad about it for the past several minutes now.

sodapopblue95:

“If you’re looking for a hospital, I think there’s one just a short distance in that direction.” She pointed in the vicinity of where she thought the building was. When they headed in that direction, Nikki looked at Jack. “Why are you being so nice to me? Don’t get me wrong I’m grateful that I don’t have to hop and crawl to the hospital, but it’s not like I’ve been the greatest or deserve any of this.”

Jack proceeded to walk in the direction Nikki had pointed, and continued in silence. Soon that silence was broken when the girl spoke up again. “Why shouldn’t I be nice to you?” he returned, looking at her. “Everybody deserves nice things, I mean at least once in a while.” He shrugged.
